Supporting a culture of Catholic primary care

The practice of medicine is not living up to its promise.
Patients and physicians know this from experience.

The medical profession has been highjacked by cultural forces at odds with the historical understanding of medicine’s telos, or goal—the alleviation of suffering and the promotion of authentic human flourishing.

Enter the Benedict Medicine Consortium. The Benedict Medicine Consortium exists to promote primary care ordered toward the growth of thriving Christian communities by practicing in accord with the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

The Consortium exists to nurture thick Christian communities through primary care medicine, in a time when mainstream medicine is markedly anti-Christian and authentic Christian principles are decidedly counterculture.

The Consortium is a nexus of support for primary care physicians; for individuals and families seeking faithful medical care; and for organizations vested in truth-based medicine:

FOR PHYSICIANS: It serves a growing community of primary care physicians eager to practice their healing vocation in accordance with the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. Physicians in the Consortium seek to support and encourage one another on their path to a fuller and more authentic practice of medicine in accordance with Christian principles, guided by the Five Pillars.

FOR INDIVIDUALS: Through its work connecting people and families to faithful primary care practices, the Consortium serves those who are in search of a primary care physician who honors their Catholic faith and puts their Christian identity at the center of their lives.

FOR ORGANIZATIONS: The Consortium also serves organizations (employers, churches and religious entities, health shares) that are looking for high-quality truth-based primary care for their employees, members or families.

Practices that belong to the Benedict Medicine Consortium welcome patients of all walks of life and faith traditions, to discover the difference in having a physician whose practice is oriented to a higher Purpose--a physician who doesn't just care for you, but who also cares about you.

Tenets of the Benedict Medicine Consortium:

  • Primary care is personal; a relationship of trust that brings together two moral agents-- the patient and the doctor.
  • People seeking medical care have a right to care that aligns with their transcendent beliefs.
  • Primary care is the foundation of medical care. As such, it should be the most accessible and least costly.
  • Primary care should be within the means of ordinary people without resorting to insurance networks or governmental programs.
